Wild Dunes Resort announced its two Tom Fazio-designed golf courses will undergo $8 million of upgrades and enhancements in 2024. The resort and its partners have invested more than $150 million in property renovations since 2021, with the new signature hotel, The Sweetgrass Inn. The resort also has added five new pickleball courts.

“We couldn’t be more excited about the continued growth and investment in the resort,” Wild Dunes managing director Tom Nolan said. “After years of continued improvements to the property with our guests and members in mind, enhancing our overall golf product was the natural next step. We’re looking forward to delivering this elevated offering through both the Harbor Course – Tom Fazio’s original South Carolina gem – along with the Links Course, creating an exceptional coastal championship golf experience.”

After engaging with world-class consultants, researching golf trends and surveying The Golf Club at Wild Dunes membership, Wild Dunes established an enhancement plan including:

The Harbor Course

The Harbor Course has been a centerpiece of Wild Dunes for more than 40 years. Beginning in spring 2024, the greens will be rebuilt and expanded to meet the modern standards of the game to challenge and excite every level of golfer. Tees will be rebuilt and leveled, and in some cases, expanded while the irrigation systems will be replaced with improved turf conditions and a design that’s more efficient in water use. Greenside and fairway bunkers will be restored. Some bunkers will be repositioned to enhance the design features of certain holes. Multiple golf cart bridges will also be restored over the next 12 months, some of which have already been completed.

The Links Course

The resort teams are currently evaluating ways in which the Links Course’s 18th hole, which has been impacted by the threat of erosion and washout. Various options are being considered to improve play.

“Upon the completion of the Harbor Course restoration, golfers that are familiar with the course will experience newly designed putting surfaces that are sure to test their putting skills, smooth upgraded golf cart paths and several new strategically placed bunkers intended to complement the current hole designs,” director of golf Jeff Minton said. “For those who have not experienced golf at Wild Dunes, from the moment you step foot on property and are greeted by our friendly team, you will know you are somewhere special.”

The project demonstrates the ongoing commitment from the resort and its ownership company, Lowe and Dart, to further develop the Wild Dunes property, as well as its offerings, amenities and overall experience for visitors and locals.

An Isle of Palms vacation getaway is undertaking a multimillion-dollar renovation of its two 18-hole golf layouts, adding to a recent string of investments in the seaside property.

Wild Dunes Resort announced this week it will spend $8 million on the upgrades starting in March.

Only the 37-year-old Harbor Course will need to be closed during the project, which will mark the first major tee-to-green renovation for the 18-hole property. It’s expected to reopen in October 2024.

Jeff Minton, director of golf at Wild Dunes, said players can expect to see a revamped Harbor Course next fall, with newly designed putting surfaces, upgraded cart paths and bridges and new bunkers.

Also, he said, the existing irrigation system will be replaced to improve turf conditions and water-use efficiency.

Both of the courses, which are open to the public, were designed by noted architect Tom Fazio, whose staff was tapped to help with the latest project.

The Harbor layout will largely remain the same, with the exception of adding some features.

The work on the Links Course, which was opened in 1979 and was renovated in 2015, will focus on the exposed oceanfront 18th hole, which has been affected by erosion and washout.

Minton said the closing stretch is “at the mercy of Mother Nature” so designers are looking how it can be reconstructed.

Wild Dunes has been owned for years by Lowe, a Los Angeles real estate investment firm. Dallas-based Dart Interests, a family-owned company, bought a stake in the 1,600-acre property in 2018.

Together, their joint venture has invested more than $150 million into the golf and tennis getaway over the past few years, including the completion of the 153-room Sweetgrass Inn and conference center. Earlier this year, Wild Dunes added five pickleball courts in response to the sport’s fast-growing popularity.

The state continues to invest heavily to promote South Carolina as a premier golf destination.

Minton said the rise of Topgolf and other simulator venues has helped boost demand by introducing the swing basics to more potential participants.

“We’ve seen more new players who are sticking with the game, and that’s a great thing for the sport long term,” he said. “The regulars are always going to come back and play, but it’s great to see more people seeing that golf is something anyone at any skill level can enjoy.”

“There is no hotel in our area that has a space truly like this nestled six floors above the beach,” said Nico Scherman, general manager of Wild Dunes Resort. “The new hotel opened with ample rooftop space…and we imagined a casual rooftop bar that mimics our Lowcountry lifestyle.”

Even if you don’t drink alcoholic beverages, the rooftop view alone is worth the effort, thanks to the surrounding dunes, hotel and pools, harbor golf course, and of course, everyone’s favorite, the Atlantic Ocean and shoreline.

“We focused on developing a space that feels tropical, from the colorful uniforms to the space that is engulfed in tropical plants,” Scherman said. “And The Nest is a mix of bohemian style, complemented by a curated beachside cocktail list.”

According to documents filed in Charleston County, Berenice Kelly was sitting in a beach chair near the Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms when she was struck in the face by a beach umbrella in June of 2021.

The documents stated that Kelly’s face and nose were “shattered and required extensive repair surgery.”

Her husband, Theodore Kelly witnessed the incident, provided first aid, and called emergency services. He too was injured while providing aid to his wife.

A lawsuit was filed against the resort on July 5.

The lawsuit claims that the resort failed to properly install the umbrella and monitor weather conditions.

The actions of the resort were “reckless, careless, and negligent,” according to the Kellys.

The Greenville couple is seeking damages from the Wild Dunes Resort and Hyatt Corporation that will be determined by a jury.

A court date has not been set.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A total solar eclipse will cross North America next week – but how much will we see in South Carolina? Well, it depends on where you are and the forecast.

Totality – like what we saw in August 2017 when the eclipse passed over Charleston – will not happen here at home; however, we are in store for a partial eclipse. That means only a portion of the sun will be covered by the moon when it passes by on the afternoon of Monday, April 8.

“Unfortunately, it won’t be like it was in 2017 when we got totality where it looked like it was in the middle of the night, yet it was the middle of the afternoon. So, we’re going to get about 70% obscuration,” said Storm Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler.

What is a total solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and earth, blocking the face of the sun, and causing the sky to go dark to appear as though it was nighttime.

Charleston saw totality in August 2017. This time we will see a partial eclipse with about 70% obscuration. However, most other areas in South Carolina will see a higher percentage on Monday afternoon.

What is the path for Monday’s eclipse?

The moon’s shadow will make landfall near Mazatlán, Mexico around 11:00 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time before entering the United States in southwest Texas, according to NASA. It will cross many south-central states before moving over the Northeast and into Canada.

What is the timing for seeing the eclipse in Charleston?

Charleston will begin seeing the eclipse just before 2:00 p.m. with the largest chunk of obscuration happening for us a little after 3:00 p.m.

“It starts about 1:53 in the afternoon for us, and about 3:10 will be our highest percentage of obscuration for the partial solar eclipse, and then it ends at about 4:24 p.m.,” Fowler explained.

How much of the eclipse will we see in Charleston?

South Carolina is in the 70%-80% range but a small portion of the immediate coast, which includes the Charleston area, is less at 60%-70% obscuration. Fowler said we’re more in the 70% range.

“I always use the analogy that if you’re in a closet and you shut the door it is pitch black. Now open that door about 30% and how much light will come in? Now you can see your surroundings. We’re not going to get the full experience,” he said.

What is the forecast for Monday’s eclipse?

“The forecast for us right now, and we’re talking on Tuesday, the forecast for next Monday is good,” said Fowler. “Sunny sky, mid-70s- so kind of a typical April day. I’m excited about the weather.”

Forecasting something like viewing a solar eclipse really depends on cloud over. You can see a cirrus cloud that could block the sun a little bit just as much as you could have stratus clouds with more widespread sky coverage.

“When you’ve got different layers of clouds and you’re forecasting those different layers, that’s the toughest part – where do you see a hole, or do you even see a hole in the cloud cover. Fortunately, when you get into this time of the year, the sun is getting high enough in the sky that the sunlight will break through some of those clouds,” Fowler said.

Monday’s eclipse comes at a time of year when you should still be able to see plenty of sun and plenty of the partial solar eclipse.

Do I need to wear special glasses to view the eclipse?

Yes, absolutely. NASA says it is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized eye protection, except for a brief phase when the moon totally blocks the sun. Otherwise, you risk severe eye injury. And again, the sun will not be totally blocked when viewing from Charleston.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s a partial or total, you have to use the special glasses. A lot of people who were around in 2017 probably still have their glasses hanging out – those glasses that you have most likely are the ones that are approved and safe. Sunglasses don’t do the trick and don’t look with the naked eye because it can absolutely do damage to your eyes,” said Fowler.
